Pakistani official: Blast at coalmine kills 9 miners

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A government official says an explosion in a coal mine has killed at least nine miners near the northwestern town of Kohat.

Senior government official Khalid Ilyas said three coal miners were injured in Wednesday's incident in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan.

He said a rescue operation was launched shortly after the blast and officers were still investigating.
