Lawmaker seeks home school oversight after 13 found captive

Jan 18, 2018

LOS ANGELES — City officials couldn't find any records that the fire marshal conducted required annual inspections at a California home that doubled as a private school where authorities say 13 malnourished siblings were kept captive in filthy conditions by their parents. On Wednesday, a state lawmaker for the area said he's considering introducing legislation requiring state officials to conduct at least annual walkthroughs of schools. Private schools in California are not licensed by the state education department and no agency regulates or oversees them, although they are supposed to register the number of students. They are, however, subject to...

Motion-activated cameras capture animals being wild, weird

Jan 18, 2018

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — How does a bighorn sheep say "cheese?" Some charismatic critters caught by motion-detecting wildlife cameras seem to know how to strike a pose. But it's not just show business. As these devices get ever smaller, cheaper and more reliable, scientists across the U.S. are using them to document elusive creatures like never before. "There's no doubt — it is an incredible tool to acquire data on wildlife," said Grant Harris, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife biologist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Remote cameras have photographed everything from small desert cats called ocelots to snow-loving lynx...

DENVER — Prosecutors charged a Colorado woman with her father's murder this week after police investigating his disappearance found the 69-year-old's body encased in concrete in the crawl space under his home. Dayna Jennings was arrested Jan. 10 after police searched her father's suburban Denver home and found the remains, about a month after family and friends stopped hearing from William Mussack. Police interviewed Jennings on Jan. 10 as other investigators searched the house and she admitted pouring concrete in the crawlspace, according to an arrest warrant affidavit made public on Wednesday after Jennings was charged Tuesday. When police then...

Democrat's upset in Wisconsin race sparks hope elsewhere

Jan 18, 2018

MADISON, Wis. — A small-town medical examiner has given Democrats across the country another shot of hope heading into the fall election by upsetting a Republican legislator in a conservative Wisconsin state Senate district. Patty Schachtner's victory Tuesday over state Rep. Adam Jarchow marks the 34th legislative seat that has flipped from Republican to Democrat nationwide since President Donald Trump took office last year, according to the national Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, signaling backlash against Trump could fuel a Democratic wave in November. Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who is running for a third term in November, sounded a warning bell,...

Jan 18, 2018

PITTSBURGH — Alcoa Corp. said Wednesday that its fourth-quarter loss widened to $196 million as it continued working to streamline operations. The Pittsburgh-based company said it had a loss of $1.06 per share. That compares with a loss of $125 million, or 68 cents per share, at the end of 2016.
