The amazing prosthetics and orthotics treatment of Dynamic Orthopedics has become well known in the South Florida region. This league starts a new path of not only helping treat these children but also to greatly help enrich their lives by participating in active, competitive sports.

The Junior Wheelchair Basketball league’s official name is the Fort Lauderdale Junior Sharks. Their first practice of 2018 was on January 7th. They will be practicing bi-weekly from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Carter Park off of Sunrise Blvd. The age for the kids participating is between ages 5-13.

Playing competitive sports will greatly help these children who are dealing with an enormous difficulty in life to gain confidence. The reaction and feedback from the children thus far has been exceedingly positive and encouraging.

Dynamic Orthopedics’ owner Melisa Chang had this to say, “You can feel the overwhelming amount of positive energy when watching these kids enjoy the sport of basketball. So far we are only beginning practices. This is a work in progress to gain more participation, build numbers of participants and help these kids learn the game. Some have never played before. We are teaching them how to be competitive, how to maneuver the wheelchair and bounce a ball, increasing their endurance, their aim and their strength.”

The children are also very fortunate to have a coach with an intimate understanding of their life situation who has played wheelchair basketball himself. Melisa Chang said, “Coach Luis Amaro is doing a great job working with them. He has an understanding of what it takes to play wheelchair basketball at a competitive level. He himself uses a wheelchair.”

Exports, consumers drive China's 6.9 percent growth in 2017

Jan 18, 2018

HONG KONG — China's economy gained steam in 2017, expanding at a 6.9 percent pace in 2017 in its first annual increase in seven years, according to data released Thursday that exceeded economists' forecasts and the government's target. Buoyant consumer spending and robust exports helped drive the faster expansion, as the economy defied expectations of weaker growth in the latter half of the year due to curbs on bank lending. The data show China's communist leaders have some extra wiggle room as they strive to wean the economy away from reliance on wasteful and polluting industries and exports in favor...

China criticizes US moves on intellectual property, telecoms

Jan 18, 2018

BEIJING — China on Thursday criticized recent moves by the U.S. targeting the sale of fake goods and Chinese telecoms equipment, saying Washington lacks "objectivity" in its approach to Chinese businesses. Separately, the foreign ministry sought to deflect accusations that China is requiring foreign firms to hand over intellectual property into order to gain market access — the basis of an ongoing U.S. trade investigation. Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng told reporters the U.S. Trade Representative lacked direct conclusive evidence and supporting data for listing three Chinese online commerce platforms and six physical bazaars within China as "notorious markets" engaging...

China says cross-border cash flows hit turning point in '17

Jan 18, 2018

HONG KONG — China's cross-border capital flows hit a turning point in 2017 as foreign currency reserve levels stabilized after two years of declines, the country's foreign exchange regulator said Thursday. The supply and demand of foreign exchange "have shifted to a basic equilibrium" thanks to calmer domestic and global market conditions, Wang Chungying, a spokeswoman for China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange, told reporters in Beijing. China's foreign exchange reserves rose for 11 straight months from January-December, expanding by a total of $129.4 billion last year to $3.1 trillion dollars, Wang said at an annual briefing. The reserves fell...

Politics weighs heavily on foreign businesses in China

Jan 18, 2018

BEIJING — Politics weighs more heavily on foreign companies in China than it has in nearly three decades. The latest flashpoint was Beijing's fury last week at hotel keeper Marriott and other companies that labeled self-ruled Taiwan a country on websites or customer materials. But companies face pressure on many sides from President Xi Jinping's more nationalistic stance and twin campaigns to tighten the ruling Communist Party's political control and have it play a direct role in business. Businesspeople complain their operations are being hampered by internet disruptions due to Beijing's latest campaign since last year to tighten censorship of...

China planning to send robot sub to sunken ship

Jan 18, 2018

BEIJING — China is preparing to send a robot submarine possibly followed by divers to explore and plug holes in a sunken Iranian oil tanker whose 32 crew members are all believed to have died, the Transport Ministry said Wednesday. No timeline was given from the deployment, although the Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Centre and a Hong Kong newspaper said authorities will send larger salvage vessels to support the operation. They said divers might also be able to pump out oil from the 85,000-ton vessels' fuel tanks before they leak and contaminate the seabed. China said that the Sanchi...
